Next Level Spirulina Chocolate Balls

Let me just start by saying that these bad boys should be illegal. I mean common, almond, coconut, chocolate, high protein from Giddy Yoyo's (my fav) Spirulina AND they are going to remove toxins from my body? Psh! Sign. Me. Up!

I've never had much of a sweet tooth, I've always been the salty gal. The...

"Give me the chips... and no one gets hurt!"

*Ahem* You catch my drift. I learned to hone in and manage the stress that was causing my salty cravings (those are your adrenal glands talking by the way) and started balancing my diet and creating snacks that were healthier, non-GMO and just as delish! Until Eric showed up and all of a sudden I had a chocolate monster on my hands.

Interestingly cravings for chocolate can be a sign of deficiency in magnesium. Magnesium, found in chocolate, is one of the most commonly deficient minerals in North Americans and symptoms such as muscle spasms and cramping are a few good indicators that magnesium is needed. Of course in typical chocoholic fashion as I'm typing this, Eric hollers from the kitchen "Want some chocolate babe?" And this is why I am now creating chocolate desserts. In fact just last night I taught him how to make his own homemade chocolate bars, which he has announced tonight he is going to make now and start selling (as he licks his fingers on the couch). I hate to break it to ya, but I highly doubt they will make it to packaging.

Back to the recipe, these delightful balls are just awesome. They really did evolve as I was creating them and as you can see, I was guilty of sneaking one or two or ok it was like five along the way. A wonderful filling of almond meal, tahini, spirulina and coconut oil make a soft nutrient dense centre. I thought I was just going to cover them in coconut shreds, because every ball I've created lately ends up in chocolate... shocker, but I must admit the rich chocolate coating really finishes them off.

These were really infused with every ounce of love, fun and laughter that Eric and I share together on a daily basis. I hope they bring you just as much joy! Enjoy! xox

Next Level Spirulina Chocolate Balls

Makes 26 Balls... I think, we lost a few members along the way ;)


For the filling:

  • 2 cups almond meal (or left over almond pulp from your homemade almond milk)

  • 3 tbsp coconut oil

  • 1 tbsp spirulina

  • 3 tbsp tahini

  • 2 tbsp maple syrup

  • 1 tsp cacao

  • 2 tsp vanilla extract

  • 2 tsp cinnamon

  • pinch of sea salt

  • 1 cup coconut shreds

For the chocolate coating:

  • 8 tbsp coconut oil

  • 6 tbsp cacao

  • 4 tbsp maple syrup


  1. In a mixing bowl, combine almond meal, spirulina, tahini, maple syrup, cacao, vanilla extract, cinnamon and sea salt.

  2. Warm coconut oil and add into mixture.

  3. Begin rolling balls, about 1 heaping tbsp worth, in the ball of your hand and place on a piece of parchment paper.

  4. Place coconut shreds in a bowl and begin rolling balls in the shreds until evenly coated. Place them back on the parchment paper.

  5. In a small pot on medium heat, melt 8 tbsp of coconut oil. Once melted stir in maple syrup and cacao. Continue stirring until all clumps are gone. Turn off the heat.

  6. One at a time, with a spoon, dip, drip and roll spirulina balls in chocolate until evenly coated. Place on parchment paper.

  7. Freeze for 10 minutes.

  8. Try not to eat the whole batch

For storage, keep in freezer and bring out as needed for a snack for lunches or a dessert at night.
