Busting Through The Myths Of The Candida Cleanse

Is This You?

  • White coating on tongue (also know as oral thrush)

  • Brain fog

  • Exhaustion

  • Bad breath

  • Digestive problems (gas and bloating)

  • Cravings for sugar

  • Rectal itching

  • Anxiety, depression or anger for no reason

  • Memory loss

  • Irritability

  • Vaginal infections

  • Skin flushes

  • Loss of sex drive

  • Weak immune system

  • UTI

  • Nail fungus

These are all symptoms that can indicate a candida overgrowth. You may have even heard of a candida cleanse and have read conflicting information and felt overwhelmed of where to start. Here are my top myths on the candida topic:

MYTH 1: Candida is the enemy and I must kill all of it

Not so fast! Candida exists in each of our bodies. In fact healthy amounts of candida help with digestion and absorption of nutrients. It is when there is an overgrowth of candida that problems arise. Look to rebalance your candida instead of eradicating it.

MYTH 2: I can get rid of a candida overgrowth without changing my diet

There is no one supplement that will rebalance your Candida on it's own, sorry. We must understand what it is keeping the overgrowth alive. Since Candida is a yeast, any mold producing foods and sugars are going to aid in keeping the candida living long and prosperous on your account. So don't take the short cut!

MYTH 3: I can eat dairy on the Candida cleanse

Yaa, no! Dairy products are often loaded with sugar and don't be fooled by the zero added sugar, dairy still contains natural sugars (eg. lactose) that are converted once digested, therefore continuing to feed the bad little buggers that are giving you grief. Not the mention dairy is challenging for the body to digest and is often the culprit behind many food sensitivities and inflammation.

MYTH 4: ...But dairy contains probiotics

Most commercial dairy products are no longer fermented and often contain very low amounts of probiotic. As an example a typical single serve yogurt contains about 1 billion bactiera (may vary from brand to brand), but know that you would have to eat 50 of those in ONE DAY to get what you would get in 1 capsule of a 50 billion probiotic supplement. Dairy is not my go to for probiotics, supplements are. To find out how to pick a probiotic read more here.

MYTH 5: A Candida cleanse can be done in under 2 weeks

I wish! While you may experience great improvments in symptoms within a two week period leading you to think your Candida is gone, the chances of this is unlikely. The Candida Cleanse does not have a fixed time frame and overgrowth of bacteria is different for every individual. Some Candida sufferers may take 30 days while others may take 6 months or more! The more frequently you tend to your candida and keep it in check with maintaince cleanses, the shorter it will be to get things back in balance. For those who have had an overgrowth for years, expecting a quick and easy turn around is unrealistic.

MYTH 6: I don't need supplements to kill my Candida

While your Candida diet will help starve and eliminate the bad bacteria, rebalancing and repopulating the good to bad bacteria ratio is best done with the help of supplements. It is not to say this can't be done through foods, but it will be a long journey and is much more effective with the support of supplementation.
