Bad Breath? It Could Be Your Gut

You may have experienced that embarrassing scenario where you are trying to have a friendly conversation, but you just know you are the one with bad breath. You try to take a step back hoping that maybe some distance will prevent the person from smelling your breath. You may have even tried drinking or eating anything you can get your hands on to hopefully wash down the smell.

To prevent that situation from happening again you resort to buying packs of gum and mints, maybe even change your toothepaste to a brand that promises minty freshness all day long. No matter the oral hygeine practices that you implement the bad breath just won't go away.

The most frustrating part is logically one would think bad breath means some sort of issue in the mouth, right?

Not necessarily the case, your gut health could be playing a big role and really it makes sense. Here are some of the gut imbalances that could be causing you bad breath.

Underactive Stomach

An unhappy gut giving you the works; gas, bloating, constipation or diarrhea is partly due to an underactive stomach or low digestive enzymes. With foods not breaking down properly, comes fermentation of said foods (uh, not the good kind of fermentation). The fermentation creates a gas build up from rotting foods and this will absolutely come with a smell.

GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease)/ Acid Reflux

GERD is a digestive imbalance that affects the sphincter between the esophagus and stomach. This sort of distress on the digestive system is bound to come with an odor from again, undigested foods and acid splashing into the esophagus.

Bowel obstruction

Yup! You may be surprised but the breath smells in this case a lot like feces (im not kidding!)

Gut smells smell, well, ripe to say the least and while there are many causes to bad breath digging deeper into your gut health is the best place to start.
