It always amazes me the number of people who reach out to me and when I ask them how long have their digestive symptoms been going on for and when did they start? SO many individuals reply that their digestive nightmares started after one or several bouts of antibiotic use.
Now here is the thing, you've probably taken antibiotics at least once in your life and hey sometimes it's needed! What is worth looking at is the good, bad and ugly that comes with antibiotic use so that you can prevent the violent, painful poops, bloating and acid reflux that some people experience after taking them.
Good news, antiobiotics are pretty darn effective at either slowing down or killing off bad bacteria.
The bad news, my friend, is that they also are just as effective as slowing down and killing off your GOOD bacteria.
This is often overlooked and the thing is, is that your good bacteria (aka your microbiome) play many very important roles. Supporting digestion, your immune system, your mood and mental health and healthy bowel movements just to name a few.
So this really is problematic, especially if we aren't doing something about the fact that we are depleting our good bacteria and defence system.
It gets pretty ugly at this point! So you've taken an antibiotic (again, I get it, sometimes it's necessary) and perhaps even you've had to do this quite a few times. Your good bacteria are depleted, what happens now?
Your good bacteria are like bouncers at the door, designed to keep the good to bad bacteria ratio in balance by occupying space so that when bad bacteria travels through, they have no room to latch on and repopulate. If your "bouncers" are depleted, this leaves the doors wide open for bad bacteria to come in and take over such as candida (yeast) overgrowth. As we chatted about above your digestion, immune system, mood and bowel movements are just some of the areas that will begin to suffer because of this.
How to support your gut while taking antibiotics
As you can see, over the years if antibiotic use has been needed, your gut will continue to become depleted, weakening many areas of your gut, unless we do something about that.
